Internet Classified SCAMs

Worldwide problem effecting virtually every successful classified and auction web site in the western world.
Usually based on being paid with a cheque that clears at 3 days, you send a balance to a shipper, The cheque bounces after a couple of weeks.
Also the "FREE" pet scam to people placing Wanted Ads. Pet offered from overseas, usually Cameroon. All you do is have to pay shipping up front. Pet never arrives. Be honest would you ever get a pet shipped in a box from another country.....

The bouncing cheque SCAM
The senario. You offer a pet for sale for Ł500. A reply, usually in poor english, often with a Yahoo email address, expresses very great interest. Says that a friend owes him Ł3000 and will send the cheque direct to you. Once it has cleared the balance to be sent by Western Union telegraphic transfer to Shipping agent who will collect. You ring the bank at three days and they say the cheque has cleared. You send the balance by Western Union. The buyer then rings to say his son has just died and they no longer want the pet. Please could you return the Ł500, less a few pounds handling, to them via Western Union. A couple of weeks later the bank tells you that the cheque for Ł3000 has bounced. It is in the banks terms and conditions that a fraudulent cheque can be bounced even though it was previously cleared. YOU LOOSE.

How to avoid the above happening to you

1. Be on the look out, do not be greedy, use common sense. Never send a balance to a third party.

2. Or just pay Ł4.50 to Petweb to protect your email address and have EVERY email response cheched manually for you by an expert prior to you receiving it. This will cover you for the 6 weeks of the advert. Petweb will also publicize any scammers caught in this trap and endevour to have their emails terminated by their ISP's.
